In 1995, filmmakers Justin Holstein and Chad Calek began documenting
Calek's band, 35 Inch Mudder, in hopes of making a documentary on
trying to make it as a band from the most unlikely off all places, Des
Moines, Iowa. But Calek nor Holstein could have guessed what would take
place over the next decade. In a town that barely had a local music
scene, much less a genre specific metal scene, a local radio station
war occurred, pitting Calek's rap metal 35 Inch Mudder against another
then rap-metal band named Slipknot.
Slipknot would go on
to sell millions of records and become the most successful metal band
in the world today. 35 Inch Mudder, due to the local commercial radio
support and high-octane live show, would become the leaders of the then
exploding Des Moines, Iowa local metal scene - a scene that in less
that a year had grown from near non-existance, to being praised by many
national publications and industry experts as the "The Next Seattle".
But in a very short time, Slipknot would do the unthinkable. In a
strange and unexplained move, Slipknot began denying and discrediting
their hometown music scene, at a time where the scene needed "The Knot"
the most. These actions, amongst other truly shocking revelations
revealed in A Clown Short of Destiny about Slipknot's hidden past, left
friends and fellow bands confused, shocked and appalled by what they
witnessed.
Left without a voice to respond to Slipknots actions and lies, the Des
Moines, Iowa local music scene, in less than two years, now went from
being one of the most promising young music scenes in the country, to a
mere shadow of what once existed. Was this Slipknot's fault? If one
platinum band can support their scene and help to create such musical
movements like Seattle, WA or Athens, GA, can the most powerful,
successful and popular metal band in the world shut down and kill the
buzz and excitement surrounding their hometown Des Moines, IA local
music scene? A Clown Short of Destiny presents you with over decade's
worth of documented history inside the lives of the countless bands
that made up one of the most exciting young music scenes ever birthed.
Observe their interviews, listen to their comments, witness the
incredible footage taken from a decade's worth of astonishing live
performances, and watch this amazing story for yourself. And then you
can decide whether or not the birth of Slipknot, the greatest metal
band to ever live, caused the death of its own Des Moines, IA hometown
music scene - a scene which was once revered by many bands, fans and
music industry professionals alike, as one of the greatest local music
scenes, in the most unlikely of all places...to ever form.
